Main Relay repair

| |

Heres a guide for repairing a bad Main relay for a Honda (in this case, from an H22A engine). For those who might dont know what Im talking about, this is a Main relay (photo), which is located under your dashboard.

A main relay connects to the Battery, ignition, fuel pump, injectors and the starter motor, for which, it controls 5 different circuit for a car. A bad Main Relay would cause 1 or more of the above not to perform what was supposedly intended for it to do. Most of the time, problem occurs when you have problems cranking a car after it was warmed up. To confirm the Main relay that is the culprit, when the key is at the START position, youll here a click and a sound of a small motors running. If you dont here this, then its definitely the relay.

Things you need;

1. Solder iron

2. Tin lead

3. Phillips screwdriver or a test pen

How to do it;

1. Locate & disconnect the main relay from its position

2. Looking at the relay, it is secured with 2 slots on each end.

3. Using a test pen, carefully pry the slots until it opens.

4. This is how it looks like on the board. Take note that therere some dry joints (cracked solder) on it.

5. Using the solder iron, carefully re-solder the points. I did all the points just to make sure.

6. This is what it looks like when its done.

7. Put the relay back together in reverse order.

8. Get it connected to its connector underneath the dashboard and start the car. Take it for a spin until the temperature raise up. Stop the engine and crank it up again. Youll notice the sound of the click when the key is at the START position.

This repair will help up to save some money for other this. A new main relay costs MYR 150 at the parts shop. Repairing it should cost you no more than MYR 15 should you dont have any solder iron. Otherwise, ITS FREE!!
